DAY 1: ARUSHA – LAKE MANYARA

Depart Arusha and drive to Lake Manyara National Park. The Park is an UNESCO biosphere reserve and one of the most scenic on the circuit. Game view through thick magical forests onto savanna grasslands and finally to the circuit of lake shore itself, Elephants, Giraffe, Impala, Wildebeest dot the landscape while the lake’s 230sq.km attracts a fascinating number of bird species, including flamingoes whose delicate pink coloring shimmers on the water’s surface. Over 300 species of birdlife have been recorded in the Park’s varied landscape. Enjoy your picnic lunch overlooking the scene that was the opening for the movie Out of Africa. Later in the afternoon continue into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for dinner and overnight at Rhino Lodge. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

DAY 2: LAKE MANYARA – SERENGETI – NGORONGORO

After early breakfast leave with picnic lunch drive to relatively large Maasai village of Ilmisigiyo, remotely located around 17km to the southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater. Behind the village and set against the lower slopes of Mount Makarot is an acacia filled valley where the starting point to the superb 6 to 8 hour hike up over Mount Makarot and down to the south of Serengeti plains. This is an utterly superb experience, walking on the roof of Africa in the company of authentic Maasai warriors with an armed ranger, through cloud forest and high steppe, with fabulous views back over the ngorongoro crater and down over the Serengeti plains. The altitude in particular makes this a pretty tough trek, but if you are up for it then you will be rewarded with a genuine sense of wilderness and a magnificent way to arrive into the other side of the Mountain. Your safari guide will be waiting for you on the descent trail ready to pick you, Masai guide and park ranger and drive back to Rhino Lodge for dinner and overnight. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

DAY 3: WALKING SAFARI – EMPAKAI

After breakfast, drive to Empakai Crater with picnic lunches, where you will walk for about 7 hours and on the way back to the lodge. On the way you may visit the local Maasai tribe. Dinner and overnight at Rhino Lodge. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

DAY 4: NGORONGORO CRATER

Dawn game drive at Ngorongoro Crater, you’ll make a quick descent and once on the floor you’ll understand why many writers have described it as a “Garden of Eden”. Within the Crater is a surprising variety of game, all easily accessible to the tourist. Unconcerned prides of lions roll under wheels of land cruisers with their excited observers, nonchalantly posing for photographs. Large herds of Wildebeest roam around the crater walls, a rhino jerks up its head to gaze in blind irritation at an intruding vehicle, an ostrich strides among herds of zebra and gazelle, while pair of crowned cranes feeds near a pool of water, Elephant and Buffalo seek the denser vegetation, Spotted hyena and jackals rest in the shade of mounds or dens. Enjoy your lunch at Ngoitoktok picnic site where kites wait to scavenge titbits, they even go so far to snatch food from picnickers hands if given a chance, care should therefore be taken not to wave food about. Later in the afternoon drive to Kudu lodge for dinner and overnight. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

DAY 5: NGORONGORO – HEDZABE COMMUNITY

After a leisurely breakfast head out for a dusty driving south – west of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Crater. Here you can find the Hadzabe bushman who have made Lake Eyasi and its surrounding bush their home. After an hour of driving from Karatu we’ll stop at the village office for some entry payments and you will head out with a local guide to search for a Hadzabe camp. The Hadzabe  are nomadic by nature and are constantly moving. They are the last existing East African hunters and gatherers and still live in the way of their ancestors. Their small population continues to be seriously threatened and a visit to them helps them. Their language is similar to the click languages of other bushmen further south in the Kalahari. Clients are often invited to come and see their simple bush homes where the tree canopy alone or a cave provides them with shelter. They live entirely off the land as they have been for centuries. A few hours spent amongst the Bushmen makes the apparently inhospitable bush country come to life. To watch them hunt is truly unique experience – from the age of 4 and up – they stealthily spot, then creep up on their prey skillfully killing it. On the way back from the Hadzabe camp will stop for picnic lunch then return back to Arusha in the afternoon for overnight at Tulia Boutique Hotel. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
