FAQs

How do I get to Tanzania?

  • Flights to Tanzania are through Europe, the Middle East or South Africa. Majority of flights connect through Amsterdam or London, before continuing to Tanzania. Airlines to Tanzania include:

KLM – Tanzania via Amsterdam

British Airways – Tanzania via London

South Africa Airways – Tanzania via Johannesburg

When is the best time to go to Tanzania?

  • November to March are considered summer and late spring months. This is the time when bird watchers flock to Tanzania in hopes of seeing many of the country’s more than 1,000 bird species. This is also an ideal time to visit if your safari plans include a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • April to June is the wet season, with heavy rains common, particularly in April. This is probably the least favorable time to see large congregations of animals, as the ready availability of water means wildlife don’t have to travel great distances for drinking water. Some parks are not accessible because of high water levels. On the Serengeti plains, great herds of wildebeest typically make their migratory runs during the wet season.
  • June to November is when weather turns dry turns dry and profusions of flowers burst forth. Wildlife viewing, particularly for lions and cheetahs, is excellent, with good opportunities to see most other game species too.

What kind of animals will I see in Tanzania?

  • Tanzania is home to over 35 species of large mammals and has over 1,000 species of birds.
  • On a typical safari in Tanzania, you can expect to see animals such as Lions, elephant, buffalo, zebra, monkeys, wildebeest, hippo, impala and gazelle. Animals like leopard, cheetahs and hyenas could be possibly seen.

What items should I pack for my Safari?

  • Pack lightweight clothing, ideally cotton, for the heat, but remember that it could be cooler when on early morning game drives and after the sun goes down, so bring a fleece or jumper too. These could preferably be white or light colored too.
  • Long sleeved shirts/blouses and pants – to protect yourself from the mosquitoes and tse tse flies.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for sun protection.
  • Good hiking and mountain climbing shoes, for those who will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.
  • A really good sleeping bag for those camping, because is so cold at night
  • For climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, thermal underwear, light layers, a sweater, warm jacket, good socks, and sturdy trekking or hiking boots will help.
  • Bring your swimwear, which is a must for the beach. Most of the hotels /lodges have swimming pools.

How are the roads?

  • Roads in the National parks could be bumpy, dusty or muddy (if during the rainy season). The park authorities constantly repair roads. Some tourists would book flights from one city to a national park. All of the national parks in Tanzania have airstrips for light aircraft.

Is it safe to travel to Tanzania?

  • Tanzania is considered to be one of the safest countries to travel to in Africa, where you will receive a warm welcome from its gracious people. It has enjoyed peace and tranquility since Unification in 1964.
  •  The only concerns might be emergencies, usually by health issues. There is emergency air evacuation if covered by your travel insurance policy.
  •  Nearly all of the safari vehicles as well as hotels and lodges are equipped with telephones for contact in case of any emergency.
