Location: Northern Tanzania, near Arusha Town
Mt. Meru is the 2nd highest mountain in Tanzania and is located in the center of Arusha National Park. Visitors often have a good chance of spotting animals on the lower slopes of the mountain. The trail to the top of Mt. Meru follows the north rim of the crater, along a dramatic ridgeline. Once at the summit, the views of Mount Kilimanjaro and down into Meru crater are unforgettable. Mt. Meru is also considered a very good for altitude acclimatization if climbers would also want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
Wildlife
Mount Meru has fertile slopes that rise above the surrounding savannah and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds. Animals include monkeys, the elusive leopard, among others.
How To Get There
Mt. Meru is approximately 35 miles from Arusha Town and about hour’s drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
What To Do
Three or four-day Mt Meru climb, which is good for acclimatization for Kilimanjaro climbing.
The lakes, forest and Ngurdoto Crater can all be visited in the course of a half-day outing at the beginning or end of an extended northern safari. Other activities include Forest / Nature walks, numerous picnic sites.
When To Go
The best time to climb Mt. Meru is between June and February, although it may rain in November. The best months for clear and best views are December through February.
