The word Serengeti is derived from a Maasai word ‘Siringeti’, meaning endless plains. This infamous national park is one of the most celebrated safari destinations in Africa and is also considered the largest sanctuaries in the world. Considered by many as the ultimate ‘wildlife show’ on earth, Serengeti National park has an expanse grassland and forest and lies between Ngorongoro highlands and the Kenyan Border. As popular as Serengeti safaris might be, they remain so vast that you may be the only human audience when a pride of lions masterminds a siege, focused unswervingly on its next meal.
Wildlife
Serengeti National Park is famed for its yearly migration of an estimated 3.5 million wildebeest, more than 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thompson’s gazelles. From Mid January to February, the animals search for fresh pastures while being tracked by predators such as cheetahs, hyenas, and the golden- manned lions and solitary leopards. Thompson gazelles, dik dik, elephants, giraffes, hippo and buffaloes also inhibit the Serengeti plains and woodlands. The Serengeti plains also boast of 500-plus bird species, which include the outsized ostrich and bizarre secretary bird of the open grassland and black eagles.
How To Get There
Scheduled and charter flights from Arusha, Lake Manyara and Mwanza. Drive from Arusha, Lake Manyara, Tarangire or Ngorongoro Crater.
What To Do (Activities)
Activities include game drives, hot air balloon safaris; Maasai rock paintings and musical rocks. A day visit to the Olduvai Gorge is also recommended.

Time to visit is December though July (to view migration) and June through October (to view predators)
